Teachers' Mental Health Initiative

Supporting the Well-being of Educators through the MYCA Platform

Overview

Teachers are the backbone of the education system, yet the emotional and psychological wellbeing of educators often remains invisible within policy discussions and institutional frameworks. The Teachers' Mental Health Initiative is a programme designed to support the mental and emotional wellbeing of teachers across Maharashtra. It combines digital mental health tools, structured learning resources, awareness workshops, and dialogue platforms. The initiative is implemented by VOPA, supported by NOCIL Private Limited, and draws on the three-decade mental health expertise of Parivartan Trust.

The Problem

Teachers today operate under significant and growing pressure, increasing workloads, administrative responsibilities, changing classroom realities, complex student needs, and personal and professional stress. Through years of working closely with educators across Maharashtra, VOPA observed that emotional and professional stress among teachers is widespread but rarely discussed openly. While public conversations about mental health are growing, the wellbeing of teachers has received insufficient attention within education systems. Supporting teacher wellbeing is essential not only for educators themselves, but for improving classroom learning environments for students.

The Solution

The initiative uses the MYCA digital platform, developed by VOPA in collaboration with Parivartan Trust, to provide teachers with accessible, private tools for mental health support. MYCA features include an AI-based mental health chatbot, guided breathing and relaxation exercises, mood tracking tools, self-care resources, and mental health awareness modules. Teachers can access these resources privately through their smartphones. A structured course titled 'Teachers' Mental Health' on the MYCA platform addresses stress, burnout, emotional fatigue, work-life balance, and developing sustainable wellbeing practices.

Implementation

The project combines digital engagement with on-ground outreach. Teacher orientation workshops and mental health awareness sessions introduce educators to the MYCA platform across multiple districts of Maharashtra. Facilitators trained by Parivartan Trust demonstrate practical tools and encourage teachers to integrate digital self-care resources into their daily lives. Thousands of teachers and headmasters across Maharashtra have engaged with the MYCA platform through these workshops and outreach programmes. VOPA is also organising a State-Level Conference on Teachers' Mental Health and School Education, bringing together teachers, school leaders, education administrators, mental health professionals, and policy experts to build collective action around teacher wellbeing.
