V-School
Free digital learning ecosystem for school students
Overview
V-School is a free digital ecosystem designed to support joyful and meaningful learning for school students. The platform provides academic resources, assessments, and digital tools that support teachers, students, and parents. It has reached millions of learners across Maharashtra.
Problem & Solution
The Problem
Millions of students in Maharashtra lacked access to quality digital learning tools. Existing platforms were either paywalled or required high-end devices and consistent internet, making them inaccessible to students in rural and underserved communities.
The Solution
V-School was built as a free, open-source platform with a mobile-first, low-bandwidth architecture. The Android app supports offline download of curriculum so students can learn without an active internet connection. All content is curriculum-aligned, available in multiple languages, and freely accessible to students, teachers, and parents.
Implementation
VOPA deployed V-School in collaboration with educational institutions and government bodies across Maharashtra. Teacher training programmes supported adoption. The platform's open-source architecture enables other states to adapt and deploy it independently.
Key Features
- Curriculum-aligned video and interactive content
- Android app with offline curriculum download
- Teacher dashboard for tracking student progress
- Multi-language support: Marathi, Semi-English, Urdu
- Free access with no registration required
- Parent-facing updates and progress reports
Impact
V-School is more than a learning platform -- it has been the innovation lab from which VOPA's larger public systems were born. Projects like Deepasthambha (Wardha) and Project DIISHA (Thane) were built directly on V-School's infrastructure, using it as the digital backbone for district-wide FLN tracking and student progress monitoring. The foundational literacy and numeracy assessment tools -- AI-enabled oral reading fluency testing, photo-based writing and numeracy capture, and teacher-level dashboards -- were first designed, tested, and refined within V-School before being deployed at district scale. The results from these pilots were so significant that SCERT Maharashtra took notice. That body of work directly shaped the design and architecture of Mission NIPUN Maharashtra, which is now one of the largest AI-powered learning assessment systems in the world. In that sense, every child assessed under NIPUN Maharashtra today is being reached through tools that were first conceived and proven inside V-School.
